Prisoners clash with Meerut jail authorities

Meerut, Apr 18 (ANI): Prisoners from Uttar Pradesh's Meerut Jail clashed with the prison authorities on Wednesday.

Five persons, including the deputy jailer, were injured in the incident that involved a baton charge and exchange of fire.

Ambulances were called in from a nearby district hospital to provide immediate medical aid to the injured.

Meanwhile, Rapid Action Force (RAF) officers have been deployed at the prison to stop rioting inmates and end their protest.

The reason behind of the clash is yet to be ascertained but it has been reported that a guard hit a prisoner after recovering a lighter from him.

This is the third incident of prison violence in Uttar Pradesh in the last month.

Earlier on March 11, clash occurred at the District Jail in UP's Basti District, in which one person was killed and several others were injured and in a similar incident in Mau district on March 21, two senior police officers along with several inmates were critically injured. (ANI)
