Kozhikode (Kerala), Apr 9 (ANI): Prakash Karat was today re-elected as General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) for the third consecutive term.

He was re-elected for the third term at CPI (M)'s 20th Congress.

Karat, 64, was elected as General Secretary in 2005 at the New Delhi Congress and again at Coimbatore for the second term here.

Karat was elected to the Central Committee of the CPI (M) in 1985 and became a member of the Politburo in 1992.

The Congress was held in the backdrop of the severe disappointment that the CPI (M) received in the assembly elections of West Bengal and Kerala. (ANI)
