Major fire devastates over 150 shops in Burnpur, West Bengal

Burnpur, Jan 15 (ANI): A major fire broke out in a market area here on Sunday damaging over 150 open stalls and small shops resulting in the loss of property worth millions of rupees.

 

The incident took place at 3 o'clock in the morning in a market in Burnpur town in Asansol District of West Bengal.

 

Four fire vehicles were rushed to the spot and it took more than eight hours to control the flames.

 

Small businessmen had come to the market to sell their wares on the occasion of 'Makar Sankranti' but all their goods got engulfed in fire.

 

Tapan Bannerjee, a shopkeeper told mediapersons that they could not recover their loss, as all the important documents were burnt and lost in the fire.

 

"We are now left with nothing. Today is the festival of Makar Sankranti so we all businessmen had come to the market with all our goods and money to earn some profit on this festive day, but we have lost every document and goods in this fire. We cannot recover our loss as all our documents have been burnt," he said.

 

Anger shopkeepers burnt down a fire vehicle and even ransacked the office of market committee.

 

"The fire broke put at 3 am. The fire fighters came in at around 3:30 a.m. After the fire was controlled, angry people came in our office and burnt all the documents," said a member of the market committee.

 

The reason of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

 

The market comes under the International Standard Classification of Occupations, special industrial zone and the shopkeepers have been promised of a fair compensation of their loss. (ANI)
