Dec 31:  Ram Sethu is back in news after a massive rally was organised on December 30 at Rohini to bring notice to the ruling government to abandon Sethusamudran Project.

The rally was organised by Ram Sethu Raksha Manch backed by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Bajrang Dal and Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP).

The huge gathering was attended by the saints and leaders of various Hindu organisations to create surmounting pressure on Union government and to mobilise public opinion across the country on Sethusamudran Project.

The presence of top leaders of BJP at the rally claimed undue support to this movement; Chief Minister of six states (M.P, Rajasthan, Chattisgarh, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh) where BJP is ruling attended the rally. Narendra Modi and Lal Krishna Advani chose to stay away from the rally.

The rally also was supported by Punjab Chief Minister and Akali Dal supremo Parkash Singh Badal, AIADMK President J Jayalalitha and Bharatiya Janshakti Party leader Uma Bharati.

The rallyist demanded that Ram sethu should be declared as a National site and asked the government to change its stand.

While various leaders keep on criticising the ruling government, Praveen Togadia, VHP General Secretary said to the large gathering of the crowd “The Union government is required to submit an affidavit in the Supreme Court on January 16 and if it decides to support the project, a nationwide campaign will be launched against the anti-Hindu government. Every village of this country will be converted into Ayodhya and a war will be declared on the government.”

“We do not want to politicise the Ram Sethu issue and take political mileage out of it. But if the Union government does not change its stance on the emotive issue it will be thrown out of power in the coming elections. We want the government to respect the religious feelings of crores of Hindus and declare the Sethu a national heritage and Rameshwaram a holy city,” he added.

While K.C. Sudarshan of RSS gave an account of the scientific aspects, “The government’s claim that the project will save money and time is completely baseless. On the other hand, any damage to the Sethu will increase the danger of tsunami in coastal areas, harm the economic interests of poor fishermen and increase the security threat to India. Actually, the Congress fears that the DMK may withdraw support to its coalition government if it scraps the project and is thus playing with the religious sentiments of crores of Hindus.”

Later a resolution was passed to stop the government to further damage Ram Sethu. The Sethu became a controversial issue after DMK leader Karunanidhi put a question mark on Lord Ram existence.
