A day after his statement on lynching of a Noida-based CEO of an Italian company that later sparked controversy, the Union Labour Minister Oscar Fernandes apologised on Wednesday saying he never justified any kind of violence.
Fernandes on Tuesday, reacting on the killing of the Chief Executive Officer, L K Choudhary of Italy based company Graziano, had said that murder was the outcome of accumulated discontentment among workers caused by “hire and fire” policies of the management.
The management should take the incident “as a warning” that not to push employees so hard that they resort to such an action, said Fernandes to reporters, adding, “it is my appeal to the managements to deal the workers with compassion.”
There are disparities in the wages of permanent employees and contract workers. The management hire people on contract basis even there are seats vacant for permanent employees. This policy needs to be given up, the Minister said.
“We are going to discuss the matter of hire and fire policy in the next Labour Congress. First we deal with PSU and later with private sector on the issue," said the Labour Minister noting the number of organised workers has reduced from 7 to 6 percent.
The Minister's controversial remark was sharply taken from India Inc. Prominent people of India Inc dubbed the comment as “shocking” said, whatever be the circumstances murder could not be justified.
Union Minister for Science & Technology Kapil Sibal took a swipe on Fernandes, saying "taking someone's life was unacceptable".
On the failure of a compromise meeting between the management and employees, L K Chaudhary, the CEO of the company was beaten to death inside the company premises allegedly by a group of dismissed employees on Monday.
Police have arrested above 130 people in this matter who are facing charges ranging from rioting to murder.
