New Delhi, Tue, 20 Jul 2010 ANI

New Delhi, July 20 (ANI): Former junior diplomat Madhuri Gupta was charged on Tuesday under the Official Secrets Act for spying for Pakistan.

Police sources said Gupta could face a prison sentence of anywhere between three and 14 years if convicted on the charges.

Gupta was working at the Indian embassy in Islamabad as a second secretary prior to her arrest.

She was booked under three sections of the Official Secrets Act, a senior police official said.

Gupta, 53, worked in the embassy's information service. She was called back to New Delhi in April on the pretext of consultations for the SAARC Summit in Thimphu, Bhutan.,

Police then arrested her. Her lawyer, Joginder Dasiya, confirmed that charges had been filed in court.

According to police, Gupta had been under surveillance for six months before she was taken into custody.

She is alleged to have passed on information received from a RAW official in the embassy to her Pakistani contact. (ANI)
