Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) organised a national conference on “How accessible and safe is Safe Blood” on Tuesday.

Gracing the occasion the Union Health and Welfare Minister Anbumani Ramadoss talked of well-organised blood transfusion service as a crucial element of healthcare system. He revealed government intension to consider National Blood Transfusion Services Act to ensure good laboratory practices and high quality of services, with measures to penalise the related person accountable.
There could be a three-month imprisonment alongwith a hefty fine, if somebody found working below standard in blood tranfusion related activities.
Besides the Health minister, Deepender Hooda, Member of Parliament, Director General and other senior members of CII were also present at the function.
While speaking at the conference the minister had pointed out the shortage of blood banks, good lab practices and questioned the quality assessment measures available in most of the blood banks across the countries.
He said that the government is planning to bring blood banks in 600 districts across India and a model blood bank in all the states within next two to three years.
Four states of art blood banks in metropolitan cities are to be set up as Centre of excellence to support the regional requirements of testing and storage of blood.
“Announcing that a National Blood Authority will be set up by the government to regulate the process of donations, transfusions and policies regarding blood,” Ramadoss enumerated that India has reduced HIV/AIDS due to blood transfusion to 2 % however the government has targeted for 0.5 %.
He commended CIIs efforts in taking up corporate social responsibility.
“He expressed the need of voluntary blood donations and atleast one blood donation camp every year by each industry in coordination with local blood banks.”
“Stressing on the use of blood component he marked that the use of whole blood should be avoided,” Said Ramadoss.
He also advocated of having a well-equipped and dedicated staff to tackle various problems related to blood transfusion.
Many lives could be saved through safe blood transfusion as many pregnant women dies due to blood related problem, anemia etc.
This conference holds its importance ahead of World AIDS day on December 1, working out on such issues has become a necessity in present context.
