VHP activists protest against Sania-Shoaib wedding plans

Bhopal, Fri, 02 Apr 2010 ANI

Bhopal, Apr 2(ANI): Activists of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) staged a demonstration in Bhopal on Friday, as a mark of protest against tennis star Sania Mirza's decision to marry Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik.

To vent their ire against Sania Mirza and her decision, the protestors raised slogans and burnt her posters.

Addressing the media, a functionary of VHP, Dilip Khandelwal, said that they would not allow Sania to compete in the Asian Games or in the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

"The matter should be investigated. The matter is somewhere linked to underworld. Earlier she was engaged to some businessman from here (Hyderabad). So why did the relationship break up? There is some conspiracy," Khandelwal said.

"We also say that we will neither let her play in the Asian Games nor let her enter in the Commonwealth Games. So she can't represent India," he added.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena activists also objected to this wedlock in Mumbai.

A senior leader of the party, Sanjay Raut, said that the country would not accept Sania's decision.

"We have no enmity with Sania. Till the time she was our country's daughter and represented India we have given her a lot of respect, but now the matter is that she is going to Pakistan and will take their citizenship. So, she can't represent India," Raut said.

"The kind of relations we have had with Pakistan, and Pakistan has had with us, the country won't agree to it," he added.

The wedding ceremony of both sports stars will reportedly take place in April, while the Walima (reception) will be hosted by Shoaib on April 16 or 17 in Lahore. (ANI)
