Patna, Thu, 28 Jan 2010 ANI

Patna, Jan.28 (ANI): Bihar police seized a huge cache of explosives here on Thursday while being smuggled through a truck to Nepal in a consignment.

The truck caught police attention after it entered the area where the residences of the state Governor and the Chief Minister are located. Entry of vehicles in this neighbourhood is restricted and this aroused the suspicion of the police patrol stationed in the area that instantly intercepted the truck.

According to the police officials, the seized items included around 200,000 detonators out of which 1,50,000 were electric and the rest 50,000 were plain manual ones.

"We were patrolling for the shutdown on the 28th when we saw one truck and a Maruti car entering a highly restricted VIP area, where the Governor and the Chief Minister of the state reside. We then followed the truck and the car. However, the car managed to escape but we managed to stop the truck and detain it. There was definitely some motive behind this. We have took the driver and the helper into our custody and are investigating further," said Naresh Prasad Sharma, a police official.

Interestingly, the security measures for the day was tight in view of the protest march and shut down call given by the State's main opposition party, Rashtriya Janata Dal.

The truck's driver has been identified as Niyat.

"I just know that there are explosives in around 155 boxes. The person who told us to transport this material said that this material is regularly transported to Nepal as such there won't be any problem. Therefore, I loaded the material in the truck after getting orders from our boss. The police caught us when we entered into a wrong lane," said Niyat, the arrested driver.

The police have stated that the truck was coming from Rajasthan and going towards Nepal. (ANI)
