Nov 05: India is to host the global meet on disaster risk on Wednesday in which the delegates from around 50 countries will take part. Around 100 experts and 50 NGOs are likely to participate in the meet which is to focus on the review of the initiatives taken for the minimisation of the disaster risk in various regions of Asia.

This is to be known that Asia and Pacific are the most disaster prone regions of the world and worst feature is that the impact of disasters happens to be higher in these regions than any other region of the world which results in higher number of people affected and killed. This region accounts only for 30% of the landmass of the world.

Asia has been hit by major natural disasters in this decade claiming thousands of lives and several countries lose between two to twenty % of their GDP and ten to thirty percent of their annual revenue due to natural disasters taking the development process on its back foot.

The two-day Asian Ministerial Meet to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh will throw light on the incorporation of disaster risk reduction in national policies and programs, enhancing public-private partnership and integrating disaster reduction into rehabilitation and reconstruction activities.

The review of the action taken by the government on Hyogo Framework of Action adopted in 2005 for building resilience of nations and communities to natural disasters will also be done in the meet” said U N Panjiar, Secretary (Border Management) in the union home ministry. Meet will also take up for discussion the new initiatives at international level.
