To uplift the status of village by linking the remote areas to rest of the world, the government on Monday has granted nearby 54,700 Village Public Telephones (VPTs) under the Bharat Nirman program to cover over 66,800 villages.
This program of the government has been supported by the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) which aims to empower the village with cheaper communication means.
For this, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) - the state owned telecom firm has also planned to cover as much as 30,500 villages under the reach of Broadband.
VPT is the cheapest means of communication that government provides to rural population to connect them with the rest of the world. Under the Bharat Nirman program, all villages except insurgency affected regions, inside deep forest areas and containing less then 100 people would be covered.
In the latest distribution program, Rajasthan would top the list by receiving 11291 VPTs for its 12389 uncovered village, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Assam, which would receive 11808 and 8673 VPTs for their 11894 and 8931 villages respectively.
Andaman Nicobar, Bihar, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh (both circles- East and West) and West Bengal would not get any VPT due to already having this facilities and no village is remained ‘uncovered’ in these states, as per government statement.
Moreover, nearly 5000 remotely located villages are being covered with VPT using satellite technology- Digital Satellite Phone Terminals (DSPTs).
