Oct 26: Angelina Jolie starrer ‘A Mighty Heart’ releases in India
Based on a true and tragic story of the life of a slain French journalist Daniel Pearl who was kidnapped by the militants in Pakistan and later beheaded, the movie Mighty Heart is a reminder of those headlines of world newspapers and television channels in the year 2002 and certainly a great attempt by the director Michael Winterbottom to present the pain and a brave deal of the person who died for the sake of journalism.
The story is derived from the written memoir of Mariane Pearl, wife of Daniel, and was published in 2003 as a tribute to the Wall Street Journal reporter. The director and starcast did try to re-erect the words of the book "A Mighty Heart: The Brave Life and Death of My Husband, Danny Pearl ". The film follows almost all incidents and media coverage after Daniel Pearl’s kidnapping in January 23, 2002 and the release of the video tape on Feb 21 showing him of being headed.
January 23, 2002 certainly brought a nightmare for Mariane, who was six months pregnant at that time and who wished him last goodbye to Danny when he went to Karachi to make a story on a shoe bomber Richard Reid and never came back. Mariane wrote this story to introduce Danny to her child.
After such tragic end she stands in awe, breathing deep to subside the pain…the pain if she knew that this is the last time she is seeing him walk out of the door ..she would have tucked him and would never let him go but then if the world is full of suffering it is also full of overcoming it.
The two time academy award winning actress Angelina Jolie plays the part as a courageous wife of Daniel and that makes a sense of her stunning acting skills. The movie do show a loving relationship of the couple prior to his abduction and then the character of strong and brave lady who herself a journalists did the best to search her husband.
Director Winterbottom known for his dramatised version is at his best and though the movie spins around Danny played by Dan Futterman, it is director’s cut to make the other characters play to the frame of the story. Futterman’s performance marks all but it is the actor Irfan Khan as ‘Captain’, the head of Pakistan’s counter terrorism head who knows all street of Karachi to investigate and find out those involved, is quite amazing.
A story of a mighty heart who took this journey unknown to his fate and lost his life to slaughter of mankind.
The clip showing Daniel head beheaded made lots of uncomfortable noises through out the world, the pain was unbearable and beyond the human culture.
Here, the director has kept alive the sensibility of the story by not showing Daniel’s murder. In the end you will find that it’s not usual story plot with a preset climax but it shows the grief and sorrow though not with tears but a painful tone of the tragic incident that shook the world over.
