Oct 11: Polls schedule for Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh assembly polls has been announced by the Election Commission of India on Wednesday. Assembly elections will be held in two phases both in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh on December 11 and 16 and November 14 and December 19 respectively.
The date of issue of gazette notification would be November 15, while the last date for filing nominations would be November 22. November 23 and November 26 has been set up as the last date for scrutiny and withdrawal respectively.
For the second phase polls the notification would be issued on November 21 the last date for filing nominations being November 28. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be done till November 29. One can withdraw his name till December 1 st.
The whole election process will be completed till December 26 with the counting taking place on December 23.
Around 68,000 police personnel and paramilitary forces will be deployed in the state for peaceful elections, told the chief election commissioner.
He also told that officials including police officials who have cases pending against them and those who do not have a clean image as far as the last elections are concerned will be kept away from the election process this year.
Gopalaswami also assured of the minorities’ voting rights who are still staying at relief camps. He said, “We have ensured that all of them are given election registration cards”.
He also told that the commission would deploy General and Expenditure Observers to ensure smooth conduct of polls and they would be asked to keep a watch at every stage of the polls.
Meanwhile the EC is schedule to meet today with the state chief secretary and Director General of Police of Gujarat along with leaders of political parties to work out a plan for conducting a free and fair election. The EC has also instructed state authority to brought all remaining eligible voters to the voting list and provide Electors Photo Identity Cards.
According to the state election commission in the 182-member Gujarat assembly, 87 constituencies including Surendranagar, Kutch, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Porbander, Junagadh, Bahvanagar, Bharuch, Navsari, Surat, Amreli, and Valsad districts will go to poll in the first phase (Dec 11) and the remaining 95 including Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Patan, Sabarkantha, Dahod, Kheda, Panchmahal, Vadodara would be held on Dec 16.
