Amritsar, Tue, 21 Jul 2009 ANI

Amritsar, July 21 (ANI): In a major breakthrough, the Punjab narcotics cell arrested a heroin peddler with four kilograms of drugs in Amritsar on Tuesday.

Acting on a tip-off, a specially constituted police party from the state special operation cell apprehended the notorious smuggler from the Umra Nangal area while he was waiting to deliver a consignment.

"He the (drug peddler) is involved with smugglers in the border area and then supplies the drugs to Delhi and other cities. We had an input that he is standing near the Umra Nangal area to deliver a consignment. A special team was constituted, which raided the place and arrested the peddler with four packets of heroin," said Harvinder Pal Singh, an inspector with the narcotics cell.

Preliminary investigations reveal that Mohammad Rizwan alias Guddu, a big name in the heroin trade, was in constant touch with some notorious smugglers from Pakistan.

Investigations were being conducted on different lines to unearth the complete nexus and the network of the gang.

The accused has been charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Regulation of Controlled Substances Order 1993) Act and other offences. (ANI)
