Oct 10 : When the game of life becomes hard to play some people take a step ahead to win the battle of life, by committing suicide they think that they have escape but actually they have deceived the very purpose of life.

But what make them chose death instead of staying alive?

A recent study has shown soaring cases of suicides in India. Every year more than 1.2 Lakh people commit suicides. And also more than 4 Lakh people attempt to commit suicide.

But majority of suicidal cases are found to have some sort of mental disorder or depression.

A suicide which is an attempt to terminate ones own life, is not chosen but happen when pain exceeds the resources of coping pain.

This has led Union Health ministry to plan a Suicide prevention programme to counsel and protect the depressed patients from harbouring thoughts of ending their life.

The new plan is slated to be the part of the revised National Mental Health Programme. The Union health minister said that 60% of the suicides could have been avoided with the help of proper counseling.

National Institute of Mental Health and Mental Sciences, Bangalore, had been asked to make recommendations regarding the ministry's first suicide prevention programme.

"A comprehensive suicide prevention programme is desperately required. The main reasons behind such actions have been found to be depression, addiction and alcoholism. The recommendations from Nimhans should be ready in a few weeks," Ramadoss said.

Giving training to doctors to identify and counsel patient with mental health problems will be a part of this suicide prevention programme. India is also short of psychiatrist

Ramadoss said "What's more worrying is that our previous national mental health programme has failed to perform. We will start implementing the new programme very soon. It will cover 400 districts in the next three years and all the districts within five years. At present, the programme only caters to 100 districts. Treatment of acute patients through counseling and medication will start in a few weeks”.

The health ministry data showed that the suicide rate is higher among women than men. Gender differential in suicide has become a rising trend. According to the data over 900,000 women in India needs treatment for mental illness. And nearly 32% fall in the age group of 10-29 and nearly 27% fall in the age group of 30-50.

Though women attempt to suicide is more than men but usually men are more successful in their attempts than women.

There is no single reason for suicide; the common factors are mental disorders, depression, emotional stress, relationship problems, anxiety, poverty, physical abuse, alcoholism, drug abuse, unemployment, financial problems and failure in love life.

May be these first ever programme to prevent suicide will help to change the stigma related to suicides and people who undergo emotional turmoil will try to seek professional help.

Suicides are very much a health problem and besides being mental and physical pain, lack of social support system is also one of the main causes.

There is a need to convey the message that counseling and professional help can make one defeat suicidal attempt.
