Now, Mulayam opposes Women's Reservation Bill

New Delhi, Mon, 08 Jun 2009 ANI

New Delhi, June 8 (ANI): Supporting the contention of Janata Dal (U) chief Sharad Yadav, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Monday also opposed the Women's Reservation Bill in its present form.

Yadav said he was not against greater participation of women in politics but it should be done through consensus.

"The Bill is dangerous for the leadership of Lok Sabha. It is a conspiracy. It would finish the leadership," he added.

Earlier, Janata Dal (U) chief Sharad Yadav had threatened to consume poison if the Women's Reservation Bill was passed in its present form. He demanded a separate quota for backward castes to be included in the Women's Bill.

Yadav highlighted that the JD (U)-led Bihar Government had implemented 50 per cent reservation for women two and a half years ago to prove his point that his party was not opposed to quota for women.

Former Bharatiya Janata Party leader Uma Bharati also decided to oppose the Bill. (ANI)
