In a move to improve the condition of postmen in rural areas, referred to as Grameen Dak Sewaks (GDSs), the central government is going to initiate several steps including the admission of their children in Kendriya Vidyalayas (Central Schools) on a priority basis.
The condition of Grameen Dak Sewaks is considered very poor as they aren’t getting as much social security and status as other Centrals government employees get.
As the next general election is not far away, somewhere around the first quarter of the next year, the UPA government has taken the right step to entice the three and half lakh Grameen Dak Sewaks across the villages in the country.
The Ministry of Human Resource Development on the request of Minister of State, Communications & Information Technology Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, has decided to treat the children of postmen equivalent to that of Central Government/ Defence employees in terms of giving admission in Central Schools.
‘From the next academic year, the children of Grameen Dak Sewaks would also get similar opportunity as given to other central government employees in terms availing better and quality education,’ said an official release.
Earlier, Jyotiraditya Scindia had requested the HRD Ministry to improve the service conditions of GDS by giving such types of facility.
The government has convened several direct meetings with Extra Departmental employees in recent months and finally decided to step out with some benefit measures to those employees.
The Department of Post (DoP) has also decided that there would be no transfers of Grameen Dak Sewaks unless and until they request for it. It has also informed that all cases of appointments on sympathetic grounds would be speedily processed and the applicant will be informed of the decision taken within a period of 60 days.
Government has also enhanced their stationary allowance from Rs.10 to Rs.50 and has also ensured continuous supply of stationary to all the offices manned by Grameen Dak Sewaks.
The Department of Posts is considering several other steps to provide better working conditions for the Grameen Dak Sewaks and enhance their level of performance.
