Rs.3 mn burgled from Ghaziabad trader's home

National, Sat, 23 May 2009 IANS

Ghaziabad, May 23 (IANS) Three men, under the pretext of buying a nearby flat, entered a flower trader's home Saturday morning, drank tea offered by the businessman's wife and then dramatically held their grandchild hostage and walked away with cash and valuables worth over Rs.3 million, police said.

According to the police, the trader, Akhtar, was not at his Shalimar Extension home when the robbers struck at 6 a.m. He and his son had gone to Connaught Place in Delhi to buy flowers. The robbers apparently knew that Akhtar would not be at home.

The three men told the trader's wife Saira and daughter-in-law Shama that they had been sent by a man named Saleem to negotiate the sale of a nearby flat. The women, believing their story, welcomed them inside the house. The trio, after drinking their tea, held a knife to two-year-old Aswin's throat and asked the shocked women to get all the cash and valuables in the house.

The police said that the trio walked away with nearly Rs.1.5 million in cash and jewellery worth the same amount. The robbers also bolted the apartment from outside before fleeing.

'The police is looking in to every aspect of the case and will soon arrest the culprits,' said Superintendent of Police (City) Anant Deo.
