Bike-borne robbers snatch Rs.700,000 outside Delhi bank

National, Thu, 21 May 2009 IANS

New Delhi, May 21 (IANS) In the second daylight robbery outside a bank within the last three days, two motorcycle-borne men Thursday snatched a bag containing Rs.700,000 from a businessman's employee outside an ICICI bank branch in east Delhi.

Zulfikar, 35, and his employee Aamir, 25, had withdrawn Rs.700,000 from the ICICI bank's Preet Vihar branch Thursday afternoon and were walking towards their car when the two men snatched the bag containing the cash from Aamir's hand and sped away.

'It happened all of a sudden and before we could realise (what had happened) and react, they had already sped away. We tried to give them a chase, but they managed to run away,' Aamir told reporters.

Zulifkar, who runs a meat products export business, said he often visits the bank for monetary transactions. 'There was no guard outside the bank. We tried to chase them but could not catch hold of them. One of the assailants was also wearing a helmet to hide his identity.'

Pardeep, an eyewitness who runs a paan shop nearby, said that there were actually four criminals. The other two were waiting for their accomplices and they all fled together, he added.

The police said had the bank installed a close circuit television camera outside, it would have helped in nabbing the criminals.

The incident came three days after two armed criminals killed a guard at the Bank of India's Patparganj branch, when he tried to stop them from robbing a petrol pump owner who had brought Rs.1.8 million to deposit in the bank. The two fled with the cash after shooting the guard.
