Recent Events and Developments in Taiwan
In 2008 January In a parliamentary election the Opposition KMT party defeated the President Chen Shui-bian?s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) with majority of votes.
In 2008 March Ma Ying-jeou from the opposition Kuomintang Party won the Presidential election.
In 2008 June The first formal talks with China resumed after 1999.
In 2008 July The Taiwanese President Ma express regret for the massacre and imprisonment of thousands of political protesters during the white terror period from 1950-60. The violence erupted due to imposition of Martial law by the Kuomintang party when they come to the island in 1949.
In 2008 November the top Chinese official visited Taiwan to hold official talks in order to improve relations with Taiwan. When Chinese top negotiator Chen Yunlin visited Taiwan several pro-independence supporters protested his visit.
In 2008 December China gifted two giant panda to Taiwan in a goodwill gesture to improve their relationship.
