Recent Political and Economic Developments in St Vincent and Grenadines
St Vincent and Grenadines witnessed anti-establishment protests and industrial strikes in 2000 owing to a proposal to increase the pensions of parliamentarians. In 2001 general elections the opposition leader Ralph Gonsalves was elected the country?s PM. The elections were held two years ahead of schedule owing to the anti-government protests held in 2000.
2003 was a momentous year for St Vincent and Grenadines as the island nation was admitted to the Non-Aligned Movement. After successful drive against money laundering the country was removed from the list of uncooperative countries in 2003.
Raplh Gonsalves was elected the country?s PM for the second time in the 2005 December elections after the victory of his Unity Labour Party.
