The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) was established on 12th October 1993 under the legislative mandate of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) was established on 12th October 1993 under the legislative mandate of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. Over the past eleven years the Commission has endeavored to give a positive meaning and a content to the objectives set out in the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. The objective of NHRC is to proactively or reactively inquires into violations of human rights or negligence in the prevention of such violation by a public servant. Intervene in any proceeding involving any allegation of violation of human rights pending before a court. Member of NHRC visit jails or other institution under the control of the State Government, where persons are detained or lodged for purposes of treatment, reformation or protection, for the study of the living conditions of the inmates and make recommendations. The President of India appoints the Chairperson and members of the NHRC on the recommendation of Prime Minister, Speaker of Lok Sabha etc.
