More detail about Puerto Rico

What Puerto Rico Shares with the United States

Puerto Rico is by far the most notable territory that the United States has control of. This country, which is in the Caribbean Sea and is not too far from the Atlantic Ocean, has been controlled by the United States for generations. The country has even made its residents citizens of the United States since 1917.

Puerto Rico is run by the same president of the United States. However, people in the country cannot vote for the president. They can vote in primaries though. This is the closest say that Puerto Ricans can have for presidential power.

The governor of Puerto Rico is voted upon by the people. The governor is the primary point of the Puerto Rican government that is outside of the control of the American government.

Also, Puerto Rico uses the same legislative and judicial branch systems that the United States uses. A person from Puerto Rico can be voted into the House of Representatives. That person will not be able to vote on things on the House floor but will still have all of the rights of being a member of the House.

Another thing that Puerto Rico shares with the United States is the currency. Puerto Rico uses the same American dollar for its currency. This is used primarily because of the American control of the island.

Also, Puerto Rico does use the English language just like in the United States. However, it is one of two official languages. Spanish is the other official language in Puerto Rico. Also, the Spanish language is the predominant language throughout Puerto Rico. English is taught in the country in schools as a second language to all students in the country. This is to ensure that students will have an easier time with using both options for communicating with others around the country.
