More detail about Montserrat
Montserrat Deeply Affected by Volcanic Activity
There are some things that just can't be controlled and volcanoes are included in that. These natural disasters can be very tragic especially for countries like Montserrat. There has been severe volcanic activity in this country since 1995. What used to be a decently progressive open market was effectively ruined.
The first eruption in 1995 was enough to put a damper on the economy but the follow in June of 1997 was a catastrophe. Airports and seaports were closed. People were isolated from other areas, homes and businesses were destroyed. Eight thousand of the twelve thousand inhabitants left the island and some started to return in the following year. However, the destruction left a lack of housing which limited the number of people that could comfortably return.
The crops that had been growing in the country were destroyed and there was a lack of adequate farming land left to start up new farms. This made it even more difficult for locals to move back and remain there. The opportunities were very restricted. The farm land that they do have is used to grow such products as cabbages, onions, peppers, tomatoes, carrots, and they also raise some livestock. With lack of housing and arable land, there wasn?t much left at the time.
The locals do have some industries that give them some income. These industries include the making of textiles, rum and electronic appliances. There is some tourism in the area as well.
The United Kingdom has put into place a three year program, using up over 120 million dollars. It is an aid program to assist the locals to reconstruct what they once had. The potential for this economy however relies on the volcanic activity. This activity can be predicted to a point but its severity may not always be. Despite the risk of the volcano, the plans are going ahead even though half of the island is mostly going to remain without inhabitants.
