Government Offering Bulk of Jobs with Marshall Islands

The economy of the Marshall Islands is unique from others mainly because of the source of work. Almost half of the work force is employed by the government. The revenue from this country is not from ordinary sources, but in fact from the United States government. Through the Compact of Free Association agreement, the United States accounted for just over 60% of the budget in 2010.

In the actual economy of Marshall Islands, there is a small subsistence sector combined with a modern urban sector. The subsistence sector includes banana, pandanus, breadfruit and fish. On the outer islands, there is some production of handicrafts and copra that provides a bit of extra income.

The service-oriented part of the economy is located in Ebeye and Majuro but is kept going through government expenditures. There is also a United States Army installation located at Kwajalein Atoll which contributes to it. The airfield here serves another role for international flights.

There are various components of the modern sector. These industries include retail and wholesale trade, banking, insurance, restaurants, repair, and construction, as well as various professional services. Copra processing and fishing are still a part of the economy and in fact, the fish are one of the largest export of this nation. Large freezer ships take loads of frozen fish to Asia and fresh fish are sent to Hawaii and Japan by air.

Even though there is a large fishing industry, the wages are rather low. There has been a continuous migration of people from the outer islands to the more densely populated ones. Subsidies are being given to help prevent this from growing.

While the government sells fishing rights to other countries for extra income, they still require the assistance that they receive from the United States. This is something that will take a long time to change.
