Macedonia has a small economy that represents a fraction of the world?s economy. It is considered to be an open economy that has been integrated into international trade. In the past, the economy of the country was mostly dominated by agriculture and industry. The services sector has now gained the lead instead.
There are many economical problems that persist in Macedonia although they have been seeing some slow progress. The government has created plans to reform the structure of the economy and the country to complete the transition into the market-oriented economy that has already been started. The infrastructure is known to be very outdated but this is slowly being modernized. Foreign investment has not been able to keep up with the country?s neighbors, which also has some negative impact.
In terms of the skill and education of the labor force, some of the trades have individuals who are highly skilled and have a lot of education. However, these individuals are not spread out over all of the industries, leaving some sectors without the qualified workers. There are also industries that have too many qualified workers and in order to obtain work, they have to go abroad. Because of the low rate on employment and only modest growth within the economy, amongst other things, Macedonia is left with a rather low standard of living.
Macedonia has suffered due to the conflict in 2001 and is still trying to recover. Although the economy did face another contraction when the financial crisis struck in 2008, their financial sector was not really affected because of their conservative banking practices and limited involvement or exposure to financial markets across the globe.
While the economics might not be a pretty picture in this area, the political and security systems of this area are stable. They are concentrating on domestic changes and on making expansions in the economy.
