Vishu Festival in Kerala

The festival of Vishu is celebrated with great enthusiasm in the state of Kerala. Mostly the festival is celebrated on April 14, every year. This festival is celebrated to mark the transition of sun into Mesha Rassi. In many respect this festival resembles the New Year celebration. This Vishu festival is celebrated by most of the population in Kerala regardless of religion. As it is firsts day of New Year people want to start it with great perfection. As Indians believe in position of stars and planet, irrespective of developments made in the fields of science and technology, and hence everyone desire the good beginning of the year that increases the importance of Vishu manifold. There is a belief that what ones see in the morning of Vishu is a harbinger of things to happen in the life. Needless to say everyone wants to open his eyes to a good thing, and this thing is called Vishukani.

Here we want to let you know that the word Kani means in Malayalam, what you see first in the morning. For this occasion all the auspicious items like idols of Lord Vishnu, fruits and vegetables are arranged in a room so that the family members can see them first. On this Vishu festival, Lord Vishnu is worshipped as chief deity as he is linked with the first day of New Year as per Zodiac sign. So it is just good to worships him as year unfolds. Akshatam is a mixture of rice and turmeric that is used for the celebrations on the day of Vishu. Apart from it two Deepams and gold coins are also parts of the Vishukkani. Some fruits like banana and jackfruits are also parts of the Vishukkani. The Hindu Holy Scripture Bhavad Gita is also part of the Vishukkani.

On this day the people wish that there should be abundance of spirituals and material things in household.
