What is Cancer?

At present Cancer is the biggest challenge of healthcare system and professionals across the globe as the search for an absolute cure of the disease is still under process. To know more about cancer, and what cancer is is very important in order to avoid the condition. Cancer, medically termed as 'malignant neoplasm' is a group of diseases caused due to uncontrollable growth of cells, which can also invade other nearby tissues.

Moreover, Cancer cells can spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymphatic systems and till now over 100 types of cancer have been identified to affect humans, which results in millions of deaths every year in different parts of world and thus, has become a reason of common concern among different nations for last many years.

Cancer becomes harmful for an individual when the damaged cells of the body start dividing without any control and regulations and forms lumps or cell masses of tissues, which are commonly, called tumors. These tumors can invade to the digestive system, nervous system and even circulatory system of the body and affect the proper functioning of these systems leading to serious health issues. These unregulated tumors are called malignant tumors. However, there is another type of tumor called benign tumor which stays in one spot and shows limited growth. Though, formation of tumors is common in case of cancer but not in all cases. In case of leukemia, formation of tumor does not take place and the cancer prohibits normal blood function by abnormal cell division in the blood stream.

Depending upon various factors of causes of cancer, the disease can be categorized in many groups of which the major categories are:

Carcinoma: Carcinoma is the type of cancer which begins in the skin or other tissues that covers the internal organs. There are various types of carcinoma cancer, which are referred as adenocarcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and transitional cell carcinoma depending upon their types.

Sarcoma: Sarcoma is the type of cancer which occurs in bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, blood vessels, or other connective or supportive tissue.

Leukemia: As the name suggests, Leukemia cancer begins in blood-forming tissue such as the bone marrow and results in production of large numbers of abnormal blood cells, which enters the blood thus affecting the blood circulation

Lymphoma and myeloma: These types of cancer are caused in the cells of the immune system.

Central nervous system (CNS) cancers: CNS cancers are the types of cancer which occurs in the tissues of brain and spinal cord.

However, the search for an absolute cure for cancer is still under process, the clinical professionals from across the world are continuously engaged to find and absolute treatment for the disease. Moreover, the identification of cancer is the early stage improves the chance of successful treatment. But the risk of developing cancer can be definitely reduced by acquiring a healthy lifestyle and god food habits, exercise and prohibiting unhealthy things like smoking, chewing tobacco and others.

Also creating public awareness about the causes of cancer, symptoms of cancer and prevention of cancer could be a major step towards curbing the disease in a larger extent. The more people will know about the disease, it will be easy to fight the occurrence of cancer at global level.
