The famous Golghar has a significant historical importance and it is one of the major historical buildings of Patna. From its inception, Patna has witnessed many historical ups and downs but still Golghar is a symbol of Patna, the capital of Bihar. Golghar was built in 1786 by captain John Garstin.

Needless to say, Golghar is one of the most dominant structures of Bihar, which is situated in Patna. The round structure, which was incepted as a state granary for the combating of devastating famine, struck region in 1770.

It is noted that a devastating famine was occurred in the region of Bengal, Bihar and its caused nearly 10 million people killed. Then governor General of India Warren Hestings felt the need to storage of grains so that it can fulfill the requirement during worst time. It was the major caused behind the inception of Golghar and it was conceived and built which had storage capacity of about 140000 tons.

The famous pillarless building has a foundation of 125 m and a height of 29 m. The thickness of the wall is 3.6m and it has a spiral stairway around the monument. The spiral stairway consists of 300 steps which was assumed to facilitate the passage of the coolies to carry grain bags up one flight and deliver their load through a hole at the top for its destination.

The completely round shape building is still a tourist palace for Patna, which enchant tourists, no matter its height has lost its fame in the modern tall buildings of the city. Although its height today has lost its significance in the tall buildings of the Patna, it has never lost its historical importance, which always attracts visitors coming to Bihar.
