Mamata Banerjee is the first woman in Bengal history to hold the position of Chief Minister. In the year 1997 after separating from Indian National Congress she formed her own political party called All India Trinamul Conference.

Mamata was born on 5 January 1955 in Kolkata to father Promileswar Banerjee and mother Gayatri Devi. She crushed Somnath Chatterjee in 1984 election, which marked the only defeat in his 40 years of political career.
