Ghulam Nabi Azad is an active Indian National Congress leader who has served at various posts in the Centre and also became the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. At present, he is Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India in the second term of United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. Earlier, he has also served as Union Civil Aviation ministry in the first term of UPA government in the leadership of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh till October 27, 2005 when after that he was appointed as a Chief Minister of J&K.

Ghulam Nabi Azad was born on 07th March 1949 at Village Soti, Bhadarwah, Distt. Doda in Jammu and Kashmir. He pursued M.Sc (Zoology) from Jammu and Kashmir University and after completing his education; he actively entered in Indian politics. First time he reached in the parliament by winning the election from Washim seat of Maharashtra in the seventh Parliamentary election in 1984 and hold a portfolio of Union Deputy Minister in the Ministry of Law, Justice and Company Affairs in the same year. After that he served on various ministerial posts and several government committees including IX Asian Games 1982-83.

He was married to Shameem Dev Azad, a renowned Kashmiri Singer in 1980 and have one son Saddam Azad and a daughter Sofiya Azad.
