Barbados: The Land of Mangroves, Cricket and Limestone Caves

The West Indies island of Barbados has a long colonial history dating back to the pre-historic settlement of its aborigines around 1623 B.C. The early inhabitants were the Arawaks who established Amerindian Civilisation. Then came the Portuguese settlers followed by Spanish and English colonizers. The inhabitants worked as slaves on the sugar plantations and until 20 th century its economy remained dependent on sugar production. In the year 1966, Barbados gained full independence from British control. Besides this Barbados is popular for its tranquil environs and for the cure of ?the vapours?. Barbados is also the scene of lively cricket action in the West Indies.

Geography, Climate and Economy of Barbados:

The terrain of Barbados is relatively flat and low lying. Barbados geology primarily consists of limestone-coral as it has a non-volcanic origin. Some other non-populated areas of the island consist of Mangroves and tropical woodland. While some parts consisting of agricultural tracts have sugarcane plantations which forms the central part and has slightly raised highland. Besides this it consists of number of beaches and fine expanse of coastal plains.

Barbados Island has a consistent climate. The temperature hardly falls below 22 degree Celsius and does not rise above 32 degree Celsius. Moreover it receives assured rainfall from July to November, while the months of February and March are relatively drier.

Barbados has a small and open economy owing to its limited production and hence it is largely dependent on international trade and foreign exchange. In present times it has diversified its economy into light industry and tourism while initially, the Barbados economy was limited to sugarcane production. Now the country has one of the highest per capita incomes in the Caribbean.

Culture and Cuisine of Barbados:

Barbados has evolved from its colonial past and is now an urbanized country having an identity of its own. The African and English cultural influences are the most prominent among the natives. The amalgam of two rich cultures is depicted through their artworks, dresses, cuisines as well as literary works. The people of this island are known for their cordial and warm behavior, which adds to its natural charm.

This country has relatively a number of varied cultural influences due to which the cuisine is also diversified. The national dish of the Barbadians is Flying Fish. The African influence is depicted through its cuisine of Cou Cou served with Okra. Also some of the other dishes include Cassava Pone, Souse, Pepper Pot, Conkies, Rum Punch, Puncha-Crema and others. The natives are largely fond of spicy sauces particularly the ?hot sauce'.

Barbados has a lot to offer to the tourists. The sites include picturesque beaches, limestone caves binding mysterious history, ecological wonders, historical sites and many more.
