Kolkata, Dec 16 (ANI): Death toll in West Bengal hooch tragedy has mounted to 160 following nineteen more deaths.he incident occurred on Wednesday when more than hundred fell ill after consuming illicit liquor in Sangrampur area of South 24 Parganas District.
Among the dead were mostly labourers, rickshaw-pullers from 10 villages in Mograhat and Sangrampur, that fall under the Usthi police station, around 40 km from Kolkata.
Earlier, the West Bengal government announced compensation of Rs two lakh each to the families of those who died.
State Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said stringent action would be taken to prevent the sale of illicit liquor, with an aim to prevent such unfortunate incidents from reoccurring.
The initial probe revealed that the tragedy occurred as the locals consumed methyl alcohol.
It was discovered that there were approximately 15 such units, manufacturing country made liquor in the block.
However, the locals did not rule out the involvement of the police and complained that they were hand in glove with the liquor racketeers. (ANI)
