Mamata Banerjee defends Maoist leader Kishenji's killing

Kolkata, Mon, 28 Nov 2011 ANI

Kolkata, Nov 28 (ANI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has defended her government's move to kill top Maoist leader Koteswar Rao alias Kishenji.

Addressing a rally here, Banerjee claimed police had announced on loudspeakers and offered a safe passage to Kishenji, but instead, the Maoists opened fire, forcing the police to retaliate.

" We were again and again telling them using microphone to surrender themselves and that police will take in a safe passage and to maintain peace police will do everything, nothing will happen to you (villagers).

Banerjee also indirectly dismissed claims by Kishenji's relatives and other activists that the Maoist leader was killed in a fake encounter.

"I asked them what happened and how it happened. Didn't you give a chance to him to surrender? They (security officials) said we gave them three days. We kept telling them on a loudspeaker that we will give safe passage and to maintain peace. They ignored it and started firing. 1000 round bullets were fired. If they didn't take action, 500 villagers would have been killed," Banerjee said.

She further said that the killing of the innocent people by Maoists and other left wing extremists had gone unnoticed by human rights organisations.

"But when they kill people like Jitu Singh Sardar. He is so poor, can't even eat properly, whose class enemy he was? When he was killed how many human rights organisations who defended Maoists, organised meetings in support of him. Left Font workers killed people, but how many human rights organisations protested in the street?" Banerjee asked

According to reports, Kishenji and some of his accomplices were killed by the security forces in a joint operation in the Burishol Forests of West Bengal's Purulia District on Thursday. (ANI)
