Bangla-O-Bangla Bhasa Bachao committee calls for shutdown in Siliguri

Siliguri, Mon, 18 Jul 2011 ANI

Siliguri, July 18 (ANI): Activists of the Bangla-O-Bangla Bhasa Bachao (BOBBBC) committee, a regional forum, called for a 48-hour shutdown against the signing of tripartite accord on Gorkha demands.

Mukunda Majumdar, President of BOBBBC said the strike was called to oppose the accord, as it is the first step towards bringing about the partition of the existing state.

Majumdar said that their party has received tremendous support from the people of the state.

"We got tremendous response in support of our strike, people, in not only whole of North Bengal but also some parts of West Bengal even Midnapore, are strongly supporting us," said Majumdar.

The Darjeeling tripartite accord is scheduled for signing at Sukna in Kurseong sub-division, near Siliguri on Monday.

The tripartite agreement will be signed in the presence of Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

A renewed demand for a separate Gorkhaland region, which would include Darjeeling and some contiguous areas of Jalpaiguri District, has created fresh turmoil over the past few months.

The Gorkha population in West Bengal estimated to be around a million has been demanding a separate state. (ANI)
