New Delhi, June 6 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Monday appeared to be unconvinced with Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh's defence of police action on yoga guru Baba Ramdev and thousands of his supporters at Delhi's Ramlila ground.
"The Prime Minister's defence of police action at Ramlila ground is bizarre," said the BJP, and accused the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre of indulging in 'mass torture' at Ramila ground.
"The Prime Minister's logic does not hold. His explanation is not convincing," said CPI (M) politburo member Brinda Karat.
The Prime Minister earlier today defended the police action at Delhi's Ramlila ground, saying there was no alternative.
"There was no alternative to crackdown at Ramlila grounds. It was unfortunate. We are very honest, we conducted things very honestly. We are serious about fighting corruption, but there is no magic wand," said Dr. Singh.
At around 1 a.m. on Sunday, close to 600 policemen had arrived at Delhi's Ramlila ground to demand that Baba Ramdev and the crowd of 60,000 supporters must disperse. Their argument was that the gathering had been granted permission only for a yoga camp and not a mass demonstration.
The talks between the Central Government and Ramdev crashed on Saturday night with both sides citing betrayal.
The cabinet ministers, who were making all attempts to persuade Ramdev to give up his fast said that he had promised he would end his fast last evening. A letter was produced in this regard.
Ramdev, however, said the government was lying, and added that the letter had been conditional upon the government agreeing to his list of demands.
Ramdev had started his indefinite "fast-unto-death" stir on Saturday to demand several radical reforms in the prevailing political system, including a death penalty for corrupt officials. (ANI)
