Mumbai, May 2 (IANS) Mumbai Indians have signed up West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Smith as a cover for Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson, who has been ruled out with an injury.

Johnson has failed to recover from the surgery on his big toe that he injured during the Test series in South Africa last year.

Mumbai Indians said that Smith will be joining the squad Thursday.

Smith had played for Mumbai Indians during the inaugural edition and represented Deccan Chargers in the next two editions.

"Mumbai Indians have signed West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Smith as replacement for Mitchell Johnson. The Australian fast bowler was ruled out to play IPL by Cricket Australia due to injury," a Mumbai Indians statement said.

"Dwayne Smith is expected to join Mumbai Indians team on Thursday, 3rd May 2012," it added.

Mumbai Indians face Pune Warriors Thursday at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium in Pune.
