55 percent turnout in Maharashtra civic polls

Mumbai, April 15 (IANS) Barring a stray fight between two groups, five municipal corporations in the state saw peaceful voting with an average of 55 percent turnout Sunday.

 

As many as 2,402 candidates contested in 371 wards in five municipal corporations, namely Bhiwandi-Nizampur (90 seats), Malegaon (80), Chandrapur (66), Parbhani (65) and Latur (70).

 

According to the State Election Commission, 55 percent of 1,518,173 people eligible to voter cast the ballot.

 

As many as 2,450 electronic voting machines were used for polling in 1,853 polling booths. No untoward incidents were reported from any of the 430 booths identified as sensitive by security officials.
