New Delhi, March 28 (IANS) Army chief Gen. V.K. Singh's action of writing to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh about the shortage of weapons and ammunition was out of frustration after being denied an extension, union minister Vayalar Ravi said Wednesday.
'Army is a disciplined force but he (army chief) did not get extension from the court, so may be it is the action of a frustrated individual,' said Ravi, the minister of overseas Indian affairs, reacting to the army chief's letter to the prime minister.
The minister denied having read the letter sent by the army chief.
The army chief March 12 wrote to the prime minister, stating that the country's security might be at risk owing to the fact that tanks are running out of ammunition, air defence is going obsolete and the infantry is operating without critical weapons.
V.K. Singh had Monday also disclosed that he was offered a kickback of Rs.14 crore in his office by a retired defence officer, sending shockwaves through the defence establishment.
He contended that he had informed Defence Minister A.K. Antony immediately about the conversation. The defence minister has ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the matter.
