Uses & abuses of sleep medication you should know!

New Delhi, Aug 23 (ANI): Insomnia or sleep disturbance is the most common disorder of people with mundane lifestyles. Insomnia is in simple terms considered difficulty in sleeping. According to recent reports from National Institutes of Health, it is estimated that around 30% of total, general population complains about sleep disruption and over 10% have been associated with symptoms of daytime functional impairment consistently, with the diagnosis of insomnia. Treatment of insomnia depends on the severity of the symptoms. Sleep medications are not first line treatment, and various other methods such as behavioural therapy must be tried first. Sleeping pills have a potential to make a person addicted to it when he or she takes it for a prolonged period. Dr. Mohammed Shakeel of Forties Hospital, Kalyan, said the risks and benefits of various prescriptions for sleeping pills can differ. Some of the major side effects of sleeping pills are: Frustration, fatigue, low energy, difficulty in concentration, mood disturbances, headache, persistent drowsiness, daytime memory and performance problems. Safety consideration to keep in mind: Sleeping pills may not be safe in case you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Before taking sleeping pills one must visit a doctor for a thorough examination. Do not take sleeping pill until you are going to bed. Avoid excessive consumption of alcohol.
