Maratha Light Infantry turns 250, makes Indian Army proud

New Delhi, Feb 04 (ANI): It is a proud moment in the history of the Indian Army as the Maratha Light Infantry Regiment has crossed 250 glorious years of its raising. Presently, the regiment is one of the oldest and most decorated infantry regiment of the Indian Army. The first battalion of the regiment was raised as 2nd Battalion Bombay Sepoys in 1768 which was later known as ‘Jangi Paltan’ along with the 3rd Battalion Bombay Sepoys was also raised at this time which is presently known as 2 Maratha LI or (Kali Panchwin). The regiment has a proud history of gallantry and sacrifice and has proved this time and again. It has been the first to be awarded with the title of ‘Light Infantry’ in 1841 during the First Afghan War. During the First World War, Maratha Light Infantry was honoured with 15 battle honours.
