O! God, let there be a controversy every day

Delhi, Wed, 02 May 2007 Sadiq Ali

May 02: Controversy keeps us going on and on. This seems to be the punch line and mantra of most of the ‘dedicated’ faces of the tinsel town. First it was Mandira Bedi and her tattoo, followed by Richard Gere shower of kisses to the ‘notorious winner of big brother, Shilpa Shetty. It is Rakhi Sawant’s turn, as she cannot help herself from staying away from it. These days the controversial queen has been ‘allegedly’ caught in a controversy for hurting the religious sentiments of Buddhists.

Rakhi Sawant was shown in a bath tub against the background with Lord Buddha’s statue, on a TV show. It is interesting to see the celebrities careful arrangement and their designs. A group of protestors have strongly condemned the act. The protestors have burnt effigies and shouted slogans against her.

What keeps them going on? Controversy or something else. Item girl Rakhi, who reached the headlines when Mikha gave her a smooch in public, recently appeared on the celebrity chat show Koffee with Karan. She confessed to Karan that controversies just keep happening with her.

The same has been observed by Bedi and the Shetty. Mandira Bedi apologized for tattooing the Sikh religious symbol on her back. Within days of her apology she was again in news; this time not for any tattoo but for wearing a saree with Indian flag on it. Another apology and the nation have pardoned her once again till she invents some other nuisance.

“I am a devoted sikh, Bedi reportedly said when asked about the tattoo. How come the so called devoted and pious followers treat holy symbols and like that. She needs a bit of counselling. There is no doubt that she might put off the humiliation of national flag with excuses like that. Who cares? At least not Mandira and people like her.
In Shilpa’s case obscenity seems to be just normal. The dame which received about 30 million rupees for the big brother tragedy talks about the racial abuse but forgets her own race, her own culture. And how much worse it can be, one can imagine after her explanation, “Did he kiss me on lips? Cheers to Shilpa.

Tinsel town might be glittering but the only contribution of most of its occupants is courting controversy. Our celebrity driven media plays an active role and is equally responsible for the misfortunes. Few days back a leading news channel telecasted an ‘exclusive’ programme in which the Rakhi Sawant, showcased her house. That is a tragic story – media follows neither ethics nor are they competent enough to produce a professional environment and services.

The proud news channel might be beaming to fill the time slots with Rakhi Sawant and the case registered against her in the Amaravati district of Maharashtra for allegedly hurting the religious sentiments of Buddhists. Bedi’s, shetty’s and Rakhi’s seems to be repeating the prayer - ‘O God! Let there be a controversy every day’ and media as well as audience responding ‘amen’.
