Congress' 'Jai Ho' Campaign

To some, the success of Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire” may not have much pledge to India’s part in an international forum, but the oldest political party Congress has something to fish out from the success. The party has decided to use AR Rahman's Oscar winning song “Jai Ho” in its poll campaign.

For the forthcoming 15th Lok Sabha election scheduled for next month, Congress is reportedly to have bought exclusive rights of the song from the music company T-series for using it in its election campaign.

The rags-to-rich film shows life in Mumbai slums, a completely other but the real side of the majority of Indians contrary to the India Shining claim.

The movie won eight Oscars, including music composer AR Rahman and lyricist Gulzar, who were awarded the Oscar for the theme number “Jai Ho”.

Despite being an out-and-out English film with a British director, the film has no doubt brought recognition to India with an all Indian star cast, music composer, lyricist and sound technician. More than the film’s success, it is a mark of India’s arrival in world entertainment getting hold of three individual Oscars.

Regardless of all the uproar over the portrayal of India’s negative side by a foreigner, the film was well received by almost all average Indians, and in a sense, it generated some kind of responsiveness among the lawmakers as well for the need to do much for the upliftment of poor, deprived and the marginalised section of the society.

Congress claiming to be the political representative of the poor as rendered in its previous slogan “Congress ka haath, aam admi ke saath”, aims for the same with its ‘Jai Ho’ campaign for appealing the masses.
