Bhubaneshwar, Dec. 16 (ANI): Orissa state Navin Patnaik said today that the Orissa government will not permit shutdown in the state on Christmas day called by some Hindu groups.
Patnaik's statement comes in response to the announcement made by Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati Sradhanjali Samiti (SLSSS), a Hindu organisation, to observe Orissa Bandh on December 25, if the government failed to arrest those involved in the murder of Swami Laxmananda Saraswati.
ishwa Hindu Parishad, State Convener, Gouri Prasad Rath said, "We request the people of Orissa to wake up the Orissa government from its sleep and remind the government to take action against those guilty of killing Swami Laxmananda."
Reacting to the bandh call, Orissa chief emphatically said that the government would comedown heavily on those indulging in violence on festival days.
Chief Minister said, "In my speech, I have categorically stated that no bandh will be permitted on 25 December, on Christmas day. I appeal to every one, to every person, every group and every organization not to take part in any bandh on that day. The days of religious festivals are days of goodwill and amity. Orissa has a history of peace. We should not let violence mar anything. The government will come down heavily on any one who commits violence."
The police have already arrested seven persons, including four on Sunday in connection with the killing of Swamiji.
Communal violence in Orissa was sparked after Swami Laxmananda was killed by a group of armed men, suspectedo be Maoists, at the Jalespata ashram under Tumudibandha area of Kandhamal on August 23.
The murder led to widespread anti-Christian violence in Kandhamal and several other places in the State.(ANI)
