Talks on for India-Pakistan anti-terror mechanism: Pranab

National, Sat, 13 Dec 2008 IANS

Sagardighi (West Bengal), Dec 13 (IANS) Talks were on at the diplomatic level between India and Pakistan to have a joint anti-terror mechanism, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said here Saturday, adding we demand that 'Pakistan sniff out terrorists and punish those who are now taking shelter in their territory'.

'There are talks going on at the diplomatic level between India and Pakistan to implement a joint anti-terror mechanism, but it's hardly been implemented so far,' Mukherjee told reporters at the inaugural function of a college at Sagardighi in Murshidabad district, about 245 km from Kolkata.

'I hope Pakistan will now come forward and fulfil the commitment they made during the visit of their presidents Pervez Musharraf in Jan 6, 2004 and Asif Ali Zardari in Sep 24, 2008 to India.

'Pakistan had promised to India not to allow any terrorist activity within its geographical region,' he said.

Reiterating India's demand that Pakistan hand over a number of suspected terrorists, Mukherjee said: 'We placed a two-point demand to Pakistan. First is to hand over a few terrorists who were involved in such extremist attacks in our country.'

'We also demanded that Pakistan sniff out those terrorists and punish those who are now taking shelter in their territory,' he said, adding all the countries should unitedly fight against terror.

Opposing the misinterpretation of the terrorism issue, he said: 'Some people often call it 'Islamic terrorism'. I don't believe that terrorism has connection with any religion.'
