Nepal, Fri, 12 Dec 2008 IANS

Kathmandu, Dec 12 (IANS) At least 22 people, mostly children, are dead and over 30 injured in a school bus accident in western Nepal late Thursday night as tragedy overtook a picnic party, police said.

The bus was heading towards Bharatpur town in south Nepal from Butwal laden with members of a school picnic party when it veered off a bridge in Nawalparasi district to fall nearly 25 feet below.

The passengers were mostly students and staff of Hill Board Boarding School in Bharatpur.

Initial reports said the accident could have been caused as the bus swerved to avoid hitting a tractor and then lost control due to overcrowding.

There were about 80 people on the bus.
