Uttar Pradesh police found Mumbai maps from suspect

National, Fri, 05 Dec 2008 IANS

Lucknow, Dec 5 (IANS) Road maps of Mumbai, with important buildings marked, were seized from suspected terrorist Fahim Ansari, arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police earlier this year for an armed attack on a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp in Rampur town, a senior official said Friday.

'During the course of investigation, Ansari admitted to his connections with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT),' the state police's Special Task Force (STF) chief Brij Lal told IANS.

The hand-drawn rough maps were part of the documents in the case file pertaining to Fahim Ansari's alleged involvement in Rampur CRPF camp terrorist attack, according to official.

'Ansari, who was subsequently handed over to the Maharastra police, carried some road maps, highlighting several important landmarks of South Mumbai that became the target of last week's terrorist attack on the country's financial capital,' he said.

'These included the Taj Mahal Hotel, the Chhattrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station, Bombay Stock Exchange, the office of Maharastra Director General of Police, and the Haji Ali Dargah', he added.

The attack on the CRPF camp took place on the New Year's eve last year and the investigations led the police to Ansari, who was apprehended February 15.

Brij Lal said he was not in a position to say whether Ansari could have also been part of the Mumbai attack conspiracy.
