April 13: Ever since the planes hit the towers in America, the state and its subject have expressed their anger for Asians in several different ways. The sufferers include many communities and Sikhs specially have been more than victimized, in the region and in also many other countries.
Wearing of turban and growing of beard has been mostly criticized and the reason forwarded is that it makes their appearance more like the perpetrators of the fateful event on 9/11.
The story does not end here and other powerless sections have to bear the brunt. Sikhs in America have been abused and there have been a number of cases reported of racial profiling.
Recently, a member of the Sikh community was allegedly beaten by a police man. Surprisingly a criminal case has also been filed by the city of Joliet in Illinois against the American Sikh, a recipient of Bronze medal for his service in the US Navy during the first Gulf War.
An officer of the Joliet Police Department hit Kuldeep Singh Nag and hurled racist slurs. The SALDEF (Sikh American Legal Defence and Education Fund) has called upon the Joliet police department to look into the concerned officer's actions.
As per the reports the incident took place on 30th march, at around 3pm. According to SALDEF, Nag was also brutally struck with a baton and pinned to the ground, after which he had suffered some injuries. The officer abused Nag and his wife with racist.
The unfortunate incident happened as the victim was in a van with expired registration tags, on his driveway. When confronted by the police officer about the van, Nag's wife Vera Kaur opened the door to inform the officer that the van parked on their driveway cant be operated.
The officer then demanded that Nag, who by that time had come, to park the van inside his garage. Nag reportedly responded and informed that it was not possible, and that as it was in any case on his private property. That seemed to have been enough for the manhandling.
SALDEF said that they are shocked about the behavior that officer had exhibited; as he brutally accosted Kuldeep Nag, and also that his six-year-old son was an eyewitness to this violent assault. They called upon both Joliet and Illinois officials to investigate this incident and for the Illinois community to stand in solidarity with Kuldeep Nag.
