Jorhat (Assam), Nov.7 (ANI): Assam's Jorhat district is steadily emerging as the education capital of the State.

With a literacy rate of 77.91 percent, which is way above the State average of 64.28 per cent and the national rate of 65.38 per cent, Jorhat is an inspiration for other parts of the State.

Many people are of the opinion that Jorhat also has the highest number of doctrates. It has shown the path to success to the other 26 districts of Assam.

Located in the upper region of Assam, Jorhat has an area of 2857sq. kms and a population of 8.7 lakhs. The conducive environment for studies in Jorhat has resulted in the growth of a number of educational and research institutions.

Natun Dutta, another local resident of Jorhat, said: "The educational environment is very good here. I am happy that my children are studying here. Most of the schools promote discipline and punctuality in all spheres of life. Here one can find schools working in different mediums, like- English, Assamese and Hindi."

Amit Mohantha, a student, said: "I want to become a scientist. This school will help me to achieve my aim. I want to serve the people of my neighborhood, of Jorhat and of my country."

Recently, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had laid down the foundation stone of the All Jorhat Medical College.

The success story of Jorhat is a lesson for the entire northeast and is certainly an effort worthy of emulation.

Jorhat is known as a vibrant place which can boast of having a perfect blend of tradition and modernity. Before being the hub of anti-british struggle of Assam, it was the last capital of the Ahoms, the dynasty which ruled over Assam for six centuries.

The cultural environment which prevails in Jorhat is stated to be a result of an untiring effort of local people trying to preserve their culture. Jorhat has been able to produce many creative writers, historians, journalists and other individuals of prominence. By Apem Kamdong (ANI)
