Karat says government ignoring 'harassment' of Muslims

National,Politics, Sat, 25 Oct 2008 IANS

New Delhi, Oct 25 (IANS) The central government has ignored the harassment of Muslim youths following terror attacks, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary Prakash Karat said in remarks published Saturday.

'The central government seems oblivious to the widespread rounding up and harassment of Muslim youths whenever a terrorist blast takes place,' Karat said in an article in the latest issue of party organ People's Democracy.

Noting that 'some Muslim youths are being drawn into groups who espouse extremist ideology and violence', he said: 'Increasingly, the police and state machinery (are) seen to be targeting the Muslim community. This has caused widespread anger and fear among the minorities.'

The CPI-M leader also accused the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government of not taking action against the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its affiliates over recent attacks on minorities.

'The RSS and its outfits have stepped up communal attacks against the Muslim minorities... Both in Adilabad district in Andhra Pradesh and in Dhule in Maharashtra, the administration, where the Congress is in power, did not take the warning signals seriously and failed to crack down on the communal elements.'
